One-Day Trip
Departure from your hotel (or a meeting point in the Porto/Gaia area) at 8:30 AM, heading to Guimarães—Portugal’s "Birthplace City" and the designated European Green Capital for 2026.
Upon arrival in Guimarães, we begin at the Castle, commissioned in the 10th century and traditionally linked to the birth of Afonso Henriques, the first king; the famous plaque reading "Here Portugal was born" stands right at the entrance. Nearby, the small Romanesque Church of São Miguel do Castelo is traditionally associated with his baptism. We then proceed to the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, built in the 15th century and now a museum.
From the lower town, we take the cable car up to the Penha plateau, enjoying free time to take in the 360-degree view of Guimarães and the Minho Valley before returning to the historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. We pass through Largo da Oliveira and Praça de Santiago, followed by a traditional lunch.
In the afternoon, we travel to Braga, one of the country's oldest cities, founded as Bracara Augusta over two thousand years ago. The Archdiocese of Braga is the oldest in Portugal and, during the Middle Ages, rivaled Santiago de Compostela in power. We visit the Cathedral—the oldest in the country—and the historic center before ascending to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte via the Bom Jesus Funicular (the world's oldest water-counterweight funicular, dating back to 1882), located next to the Baroque staircase depicting the Stations of the Cross. We continue to the Sanctuary of Sameiro for a final panoramic view of the Minho region before returning to Porto. Estimated arrival in the Porto/Gaia area is around 6:00 PM.
